Green Split Peas
Our New Zealand-grown dried green green peas have the husk removed and the flesh split in half. Green split peas are easily interchangeable with lentils and is the key ingredient in pea and ham soup. Green split peas have a mild earthy flavour and a firm, smooth texture. These Green Split Peas hold their shape after cooking. Perfect for burgers, hot pots and hearty soups, this dish is a perfect addition to any meal.
How to use:
Contrary to popular belief, It is not necessary to soak split green peas before cooking. However, by doing so you will be able to reduce cooking time. To cook the peas simply rinse the peas in water several times before beginning to cook. When you cook, cover the peas with about double the amount of water or stock and bring to boil. After reaching the boil, turn the heat down to medium, and cook for about 45 minutes until the peas are tender. After draining, Green Split Peas can be used as needed for various dishes.
In addition to the Split Green Peas being served as a puree when cooked, you can also add herbs and garlic to serve with grilled fish or vegetables. These peas are delicious mixed with sumac or dukkah and served as a dip or spread. Among the best things you can do with green split peas is to make minestrone or to serve them with lamb shanks. You can also add them to a veggie burger recipe.
